Friday 18 May, 2012 – Sydney, Australia
An interesting start to my journey to Sydney today… My Supershuttle transfer was booked to pick me up at 3.55am to get me to the airport in time to meet a 4.40am check-in.
So, I’m standing at the end of the driveway in the pitch black (probably some dodgy people around, given I live one street over from Christchurch’s red light street), my fake Louis V and Simba waiting (more patiently than me) at my side. 4.05am ticks around and I’m starting to worry, so I call Supershuttle and get a slightly irritated (hey, I’ve been up since 3.00am too lady!!) reservations rep, who tells me that the shuttle will arrive at 4.15am and just has one more pick up after me… needless to say, I wasn’t at the airport by 4.40am but the lovely Air NZ check-in lady allowed me the international check-in. THANK GOD.
On arrival at Auckland Airport domestic terminal, I decided to suck up the fact that I was wearing heels, and walk to the international terminal. Go figure, it starts pouring down with rain.Made it to Sydney and it’s a lovely warm day! Tired as a [insert witty simile here] though. I walked around the city for a while before finding a cafe at Circular Quay for lunch – just a wee tip, Sydney is a city of towering buildings, so Circular Quay is a pretty safe bet if you want to sit outside in the sun. Stopped by Paddy’s Market quickly, but quickly got over the endless rows of fake labels and little wooden Buddahs.
Drinks at L’Aqua were followed by a visit to Sydney’s latest attraction, Madame Tussauds. Worth a quick look around, just to get a photo with Johnny and Leo (I got one with Alf Stewart too..for different reasons).
I finished my evening with some potent cocktails at Cargo Bar just across from Madame Tussauds. A lot different better than it’s Christchurch namesake.
Thank goodness I had my Berrocca Twist & Go back in my hotel room!
